Klean Capital

Intermediary Investment Services for Clean Energy and Property Projects

Intermediary Investment Services

Klean Capital Inc. is wholly owned by Klean Industries and acts as an investment intermediary between project sponsors who need capital and the institutional investors, banks and private funds that supply it. Since 1998 the team has raised funding for over a hundred different transactions, and that transaction history is why sponsors bring complex clean-energy and commercial-property mandates to the group rather than to a generalist broker.

What an investment intermediary actually does

An intermediary is neither a lender nor a passive introducer. Klean Capital accepts a mandate, tests whether the project is financeable before anything is circulated, and then builds the information package an investment committee can act on: sponsor track record, technology provenance, feedstock and offtake contracts, the construction route, and a cash-flow model that survives sensitivity testing. Only once that package stands up is the opportunity taken to market, and it is taken to investors who have already funded assets of that type.

Two markets, one underwriting discipline

Mandates concentrate on two markets. The first is the sale and leaseback of commercial property, where owner-occupiers release capital tied up in buildings while retaining operational control of the premises. The second is the funding of new game-changing clean technologies — waste-to-energy and energy-from-waste, resource recovery, wind and solar. Both are underwritten the same way: contracted revenue, creditworthy counterparties, and a capital structure matched to the useful life of the asset.

Instruments combined case by case

Private equity, senior and junior debt, mezzanine and PPP funding are combined transaction by transaction rather than forced into a house product. Where scale and credit quality permit, Klean Capital arranges Private Placement Investment Grade Bonds placed with institutional investors. Where a sponsor needs a partner rather than a lender, we work on a joint venture basis with developers. Where an operating asset needs new ownership, we purchase existing operational cleantech and waste-conversion projects through succession plans.

Technical judgement behind the capital

Capital decisions on cleantech assets fail on engineering far more often than on spreadsheets. Feasibility studies, turn-key EPC (DBC) delivery and due diligence sit inside the same group, so every funding package is stress-tested by people who have built and operated the plants.
