Transmission Infrastructure Funding for Grid Connection and Delivery Assets

Transmission Infrastructure Funding

Generation without delivery is a stranded asset. Klean Capital funds the transmission and connection infrastructure that moves clean power from where it is produced to where it is consumed, treating the wires, substations and interconnection works as financeable assets in their own right.

What this covers

Typical scope includes dedicated connection lines from a generating plant to the network, substations and switchgear, upgrades triggered by a new connection, and the heat, steam or gas offtake infrastructure that links a waste-to-energy facility to an industrial or district customer. These works are frequently the largest single line item outside the plant itself, and they are too often left out of the funding plan until the construction programme forces the issue.

Why transmission is financed differently

Transmission assets behave more like regulated infrastructure than like merchant generation. Revenue tends to come from availability, use-of-system charges or a contracted connection agreement rather than from commodity prices, and asset lives are long. That profile suits long-dated institutional money: Klean Capital arranges Private Placement Investment Grade Bonds placed directly with institutional investors, and public-private partnership funding where a utility, municipality or public authority is the counterparty.

Structuring the stack

Klean Capital combines private equity, debt, mezzanine capital and PPP funding case by case. Connection works are commonly financed alongside the generating asset so that a single structure carries the whole delivery chain, but they can also be ring-fenced in a separate company where a different ownership or tariff regime applies. Projects can be taken on a joint venture basis with developers, and existing operational assets can be purchased through succession plans.

Diligence on the connection

Connection risk is a classic cause of delay and cost overrun: queue position, curtailment exposure, wayleaves and easements, and the scope of network-driven upgrades all need to be understood before funding is committed. Klean Capital Inc. is wholly owned by Klean Industries, which provides feasibility studies, design and engineering, due diligence and turn-key EPC (DBC) delivery, so these questions are examined technically rather than taken on trust. Since 1998 the firm has raised funding for over a hundred different transactions.

Timing the funding to the programme

Connection works often have to be ordered and paid for long before a generating asset earns anything, and network operators rarely flex their payment milestones to suit a developer's cash flow. Building that profile into the structure from the outset — equity or mezzanine capital carrying the early spend, long-dated debt refinancing it once the asset is energised — avoids the most common funding squeeze in clean-energy delivery.

Fund the delivery chain, not just the plant

Klean Capital finances connection lines, substations, network upgrades and heat or gas offtake infrastructure using long-dated debt, investment grade bonds and PPP funding.
